What Is a Ghostwriter?
A ghostwriter is hired by someone, we will call him or her the credited author, to write a book. When the book is complete, the ghostwriter will not receive credit for having a hand in the process unless the credited author decides to share his or her recognition. There are many different kinds or degrees of ghostwriting and, depending on the kind of work being written, there are many different advantages to hiring a ghost writer.
The simplest form of ghostwriting occurs when someone has the bones of a manuscript and hires a ghostwriter to pull it all together. In this case, the content, the writing style, and the ideas within the finished product were all supplied by the credited author; the ghostwriter simply stitches the pieces together and makes sure that it is grammatically correct and well developed.
Ghostwriters are often given a larger role than that of metaphorical seamstress. Oftentimes, the credited author comes up with the ideas for the work, but leaves all of the content and organization to the ghostwriter. It is important, in this case, for the ghostwriter and the credited author to remain in close contact, to ensure that the product matches what the credited author has in mind.
If the book is a technical one and involves a large amount of research, the ghostwriter will often also work as a researcher. These projects normally take much longer than projects that do not require research, but can benefit both parties; the credited author does not have to do the research and the ghostwriter makes more money by doing the research.
Ghostwriters are hired by a variety of different people to write a variety of different projects. Celebrities often hire ghostwriters to write their autobiographies or other books, and scientists often recruit the help of a ghostwriter to compile data in such a way that will make sense to the average person.
The cost of hiring a ghostwriter will vary, depending on who you hire, how much work you expect them to accomplish, and how quickly the deadline is approaching. Most of the time ghostwriters are paid per page, but less frequently they are paid per word or a flat rate.
For anyone who wants to write a book but doesn't have the time or the know-how, hiring a ghostwriter is definitely the way to go.
