How to Write an Ebook – 7 Steps to Keeping Your Ebook “User Friendly”

How many of us snuggle into our chairs with a cup of hot chocolate to read a good ebook?  Not many of us.  Reading from a computer screen is very different then a physical book with pages to turn.  Our eyes and brain react differently to reading from a computer.  But if you keep these 7 simple techniques in mind your readers will not be able to put their laptops down.

1- Use lots of white space.  By white space, I mean keep your paragraphs small.  Three to four sentences is best.  Doing this will create an oasis of white around the paragraphs.  This is much easier on the readers eyes.

2- Use lots of bullets.  Not only does this help break up the page further, creating more white space, but readers love bullets.  They see it as a checklist.  And this is exactly what people who are trying to learn something want.

3- Use simple easy to read fonts.  Forget about the fancy cursive or other such fonts.  You may think it is really cool, but your readers eyes will tire quickly.

4- Use a font size of 12 to 14.  This seems to be the best size for easy reading on a  computer screen.

5- Keep your formating consistent.  If you have 2 line spaces between paragraphs, keep it that way throughout your manuscript.  The same thing with your heading and subheadings.  If your headings are centered, then that is how it should be throughout the book.

6- Keep the cute little clip art down to a minimum.  Your readers will see that as an attempt to make up for a lack of content, with useless pictures.  Of course you should include pertinent pictures graphs and charts to help drive home your message.  Make sure that any photos that you use are royalty free.  Microsoft forbids using their clip art for commercial purposes.

7- Don't fill your ebook with a sea of click-able links.  Each time they see a link, your reader has to decide whether to continue reading or click on the link.  Your reader will quickly become distracted from your message as they surf away to another site.  I have found that including a list of resources at the end of each chapter is sufficient.  Save the “in paragraphs” links for your  most important information that you DO want them to click on.  A good example would be the product you are selling or an affiliate link.

If you follow these simple 7 steps, you will have an undistracted reader who can concentrate on your message.
